WOOF WOOF
sneak peek of piece in progress. POSTER-SIZE BEEYAIS!
ZUT.
BUGBOT! I designed this guy as a character/robot for a comic I’m going to make in the very near future. Before I start the comic however I think I’m going to create a model of this dude in ZBrush just so that I have a good reference of him from all angles before I jump into illustrating him on the page. He’s a bit too complicated/strange for me to trust my memory and instincts on in terms of drawing him accurately right away.
I actually started a rough of this guy as a small doodle in my sketch book during this week’s sketch club. Phil, Scott and I haven’t met for sketch club in quite some time, so it was good to get that happening again!
Also, this guy was my first experiment with Manga Studio. I still hadn’t quite figured out how to use the brushes for this image, but by the end of the drawing I definitely had a better hang of it and was pleasantly surprised with the software!

WOT?
I’ve been messing around with Manga Studio 4 recently. This is the second piece I’ve done with that software. Don’t really like the drawing of the guy that much, but manga studio certainly helps speed up my process. I’m really enjoying this program! And for only fifty bucks I’d recommend it to anyone. If you already have a tablet just think of it as investing fifty dollars into a really nice ink-brush pen that will last forever and never run out of ink. Oh, and a lifetime supply of letraset screentone too! As an artist or illustrator that’s a deal you can’t deny. I’m definitely going to be phasing out Photoshop in lieu of Manga Studio when it comes to my inking/line-refinement and grayscale-value setting processes. It’s just that good.
But on the other hand I definitely won’t be betraying Photoshop for my colours anytime soon… unless of course I ever manage to try Corel Painter… which looks tantalizingly awesome…
Rough preliminary sketch (not visible), linework, and shading all done in Manga Studio. Colour and highlights done in Photoshop.
