BIG DUMP

with 2 comments

I’ve been pretty busy lately and haven’t had the chance to get around to scanning and uploading stuff from the last few weeks. Some of this is figure drawing, some of this is just random drawings, and there’s also 4 weeks worth of skratch klub material in here too.

So yeah. Peruse at your leisure.

Okay, I KNOW the hand is screwed up in that one. It’s not finished. We were finishing up at skratch klub before I had time to put any finishing touches/corrections on this one. Take it for what it is.

Hey, so here’s what I’ve been doing in my sketchbook the past week and some figure drawing stuff too.

Continuing with my theme of trying to draw things that I cannot draw, today I decided to attempt doing some sort of costume/fashion design. I like the stripey leggings, I like the shoes, I like the pirate sleeves and I especially like the little wing sleeves. I think I should have fixed the scarf, and the skirt is a little too sailor moon. But all in all, I think it’s passable considering this is something I’m supposed to be bad at.

I was saying to Scott and Phil today during our session that I think I’m finally back in the practice of good drawing. I wouldn’t say I’ve really improved any substantial amount, but I HAVE managed to remember the proper discipline it takes to draw something well. My previous efforts suffered from a lack of planning and were too hastily drawn. I need to have patience if I hope to do something right and I think I’m getting that patience back after having lost it for some time due to a lack of practice.  Forcing myself to do little 60-second thumbnails in the corner of the page before I draw anything is a good way to keep myself from just diving into a detailed drawing without any sort of a plan.  I think I’m finally getting back into the zone where I can start improving my skills because I’m finally drawing properly again and giving myself the chance to learn and discover new things.

The three of us meet and draw at a little coffee shop near the university in the city we live in. It’s a pretty trendy little place and a lot of the university kids make up a large portion of the clientele. But between today and last week I can’t help but wonder what is up with these people. Last week there were these two girls sitting across from us and they talked for at least an hour and a half non-stop about all the dudes they’ve had sex with… and they were going into the kinds of details that nobody wants to hear, and they were saying it rather loudly too. I couldn’t help but wonder if they were aware that they were coming off as pretty much the two biggest sluts in the city to everyone in the shop. I was kind of disgusted by them and to be honest, relieved when they left. I mean, I’m a pretty liberal dude, anyone who knows me can attest, but you gotta have some level of self-dignity, come on.

And then today there were two girls sitting across from us again (I don’t know if they were the same ones as last time or not, I couldn’t tell) but they came with a psychic who was doing tarot card readings for them for about an hour and a half. Now, don’t get me wrong, I have no problem with you doing your tarot thing in public… but they took it so seriously. I’m sure it’s kind of fun and there’s some level of entertainment, but I can’t help but think you need to do a little self-evaluation of your own if you seriously think some kook with a deck of cards is going to determine your fate. Come on.

Also, stupid wii-fit told me I have a wii-fit age of 40 today. That’s such garbage. My Body Mass Index was perfect, and it STILL said I’m like a 40-year-old man. SUPER HARSH. Stupid wii fit; I’ll show you!

/rant

PS: on the way out I noticed a new gelato shop opened up across the street from where we sketch!  Maybe next week we should check it out.  (PPS: SHUT UP WII FIT, I EAT GELATOS IF I WANT)

Tonight Scott and I hit up figure drawing class. The place was packed!!! Usually there’s only like a dozen or so people in the room, but tonight there was over 30. The guy who kinda runs the show said that it was a record crowd. Scotty and I came late because we were fooling around at work and not watching the time, so we had to sit on the floor. But that was cool; we got some different angles from the ground and I think our session went relatively well. Here’s some of the stuff I did tonight (you might notice it was the same model as we had once before):

robot

Drew this one at drawing club this week. I decided to draw a robot because I pretty much am the worst at drawing robots and I figured I should make a policy of trying to get better at the things I can’t draw. To make it easier on myself I decided to try and make a thumbnail first and then work on just the outline of the full-sized version before I got to filling in the details, and honestly I think the more systematic approach helped quite a bit. Obviously I worked from the top down, because as you get closer to the foot at the bottom right of the page it gets more and more unfinished, hahaha.

I might try and finish this one in photoshop too, we’ll see…
would be nice to get some finished stuff under my belt… but that requires finding the time to do it.

I decided to draw a dude who has stupid hair like me. Drew this one really fast. It’s okay I guess.  I like the concept better than the execution.

this one was from drawing club 2 weeks ago. It took me forever to get the armour coming out right, and even still it’s a bit wonky. Oh well. Might finish this in photoshop later… we’ll see.

Oh, and it’s probably pretty obvious but I fixed the legs a bit as per the message, haha.
